PHIVOLCS CLARIFICATION ON ALLEGED 6.8 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology would like to inform the general public that the text message currently circulating in the Philippines about a prediction by a certain “US Geological Society” of a “magnitude 6.8 earthquake to hit Philippine Plates tonight”, purportedly issued by  the “Hawaii State Emergency Preparedness OfficeIS A HOAX.  This hoax started the day after the Magnitude 7.9 China earthquake of May 12, 2008.

PHIVOLCS-DOST CONDUCT TSUNAMI READY CAMPAIGNS IN THE CAVITE COASTAL COMMUNITIES

 

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) – Department of Science and Technology (DOST), together with the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council of Cavite Province and the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), will assist Cavitenos to help them become resilient to tsunami thru the conduct of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities and tsunami drills. Residents of Barangay Sta. Mercedes in Maragondon, Cavite had a lecture session about tsunami and Community-Based Early Warning System (CBEWS) on the evening of 8 March 2008.

KANLAON VOLCANO RAISES ITS ALERT LEVEL STATUS

 

The seismic network at Kanlaon Volcano (10024.7’N, 12307.9’E) recorded a total of twenty-one (21) low frequency volcanic earthquakes (LFVQ) during the past 24 hours. The significant increase in seismicity has been observed for the past three days. Due to the increasing number of recorded volcanic earthquakes, PHIVOLCS raises Kanlaon Volcano’s alert status from Alert Level 0 to Alert Level 1.

3rd NATIONWIDE SIMULTANEOUS EARTHQUAKE DRILL HELD

Three thousand students of the Malabon National High School (MNHS) performed the Duck, Cover and Hold procedure and vacated their school buildings to go to their evacuation area during the earthquake drill simultaneously held nationwide on 18 October 2007 at 9 in the morning.  The demonstration drill at MNHS was graced by national and local officials

VOLCANO ECOTOURISM IN THE PHILIPPINES GETS A START

 

 

One hundred-thirty (130) participants attended the Volcano Ecotourism Forum held in Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) Auditorium last September 21, 2007. The forum was a coordinated project among Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (DENR-PAWB), Philippine-French Professionals Association (PFPA), Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC), Embassy of France in the Philippines , UBI France, Department of Tourism (DOT) and PHIVOLCS.

READY PROJECT CONDUCTS TSUNAMI DRILL AT SOUTHERN LEYTE

 

A Community-Based Early Warning System for Tsunami was conducted at Barangay Pondol, Hinunangan, Southern Leyte last January 21, 2008. The Pondol drill is one of the successful tsunami drills conducted under the READY project, funded by AusAID through UNDP.

READY Project to Help Prepare Bohol for Disasters

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), together with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA), and Office of Civil Defense (OCD), is spearheading a series of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaigns in the Province of Bohol slated on 04-13 February 2008.

BULUSAN VOLCANO EXPLODES AT PREDAWN

04 October 2007 , 1:34 A.M. local time

Two episodes of ash explosions occurred at Bulusan Volcano (12 46.2N, 124 03E) early today as recorded by the seismic network.  The explosions were not visually observed due to thick clouds covering the volcanos summit. These events were recorded as explosion type-earthquakes at 1:34 AM and 1:39 AM .

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) Department of Science and Technology (DOST) focuses on Boholanos to help them become resilient to tsunami thru the conduct of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities. Residents of Barangay Canmanico in Valencia , Bohol will have a short lecture session about tsunami and Community-Based Early Warning System (CBEWS) on 17 September 2007 before their tsunami drill on 18 September.
