Geologic Disaster Awareness and Preparedness (GDAPD) Division Chief Ma. Mylene Martinez-Villegas and Engr Florenette Garcia of Seismological Observation and Earthquake Prediction Division (SOEPD)- Dipolog City attended a 3-day Regional Workshop on Lessons Learned on Tsunami Awareness and Education Materials Adaptation and Development from 19-21 July 2011. The workshop was organized by Jakarta International Tsunami Information Center (JTIC) based in UNESCO with funding support from UNESCAP. The workshop aimed to gather experts and practitioners of earthquake and tsunami awareness materials, specifically from Indonesia, Thailand, Timor Leste and the Philippines to share lessons learned out of the implementation of the UNESCAP-funded project on sharing adaptation of tsunami information materials. The meeting was also an opportunity for other Indian Ocean countries namely Bangladesh, Iran, India, Malaysia, Maldives and Sri Lanka to present the gaps and needs in terms of awareness and preparedness materials on earthquake and tsunami in their respective countries.
The workshop also focused on ensuring how science can be translated and simplified and be used as strong basis for awareness and education materials. A special session was also devoted to lessons learned from the recent tsunami events in Chile (February 2010), Mentawai, Indonesia (October 2010) and Japan (March 2011) in the context of awareness and education materials.
Ms. Villegas made two technical presentations- Lessons Learned in Materials Development and Adaptation, Country Case: The Philippines and Lessons Learned from Pacific Wave Exercise in the Philippines, while Engr Garcia presented the Lessons Learned in Materials Development and Adaptation, Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines. /mlmvillegas
