PHIVOLCS, JICA-Manila commemorate March 2011 Japan Earthquake

In remembrance of the March 11, 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA-Manila) held an interactive press conference on March 7, 2013 at the PHIVOLCS Auditorium.

The press conference highlighted the midterm accomplishments and sharing of information that all resulted from the close collaboration between the Philippine and Japanese experts working under the JICA-JST Project entitled “Enhancement of the Earthquake and Volcano Monitoring and Effective Utilization of Disaster Mitigation Information in the Philippines.”

 Two new feature stories in manga or comics of the Filipino eyewitnesses’ accounts on the 11 March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami was launched.

PHIVOLCS Director Renato U. Solidum, Jr. and Mr. Takahiro Sasaki of JICA Philippines together unveiled and introduced the two comics entitled “Ang Huling Sayonara (Ang Huling Paalam)” and “Daang Mapanganib”  to the event’s participants comprised of different tri-media outfits, JICA officers and PHIVOLCS personnel.

Director Solidum said that people will have an idea on how to prepare for tsunami and earthquake based on the two comics which feature the 2011 Japan earthquake experiences of Imelda Suzuki and Lorna Kikuta.

Mr. Sasaki said in his message: “In order to translate the lessons learnt into further effective counter measures for earthquake and tsunami disasters in the world, and mitigate damages and as much as possible target for zero casualty here in the Philippines and in Japan, the JICA Philippine office embarks on an important task to raise up the activities in recalling the voice of Tsunami victims and conveying the valuable experience an lessons to the people of the Philippines as well as in Japan.

The PHIVOLCS and the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED) had documented interviews and testimonies of Japan-resident Filipinos who experienced first-hand the tsunami disaster to come-up with the newly-introduced information materials.
