PHIVOLCS conducted another workshop entitled “Earthquake Impact Assessment Methodologies: Exposure Database Development and Calculations” for the Region II and III State Colleges and Universities (SUCs). This activity is in line with the Regional Disaster Science and Management S&T Capacity Development Project, which is being funded by DOST-PCIEERD, and which PHIVOLCS is providing the technical expertise.

The workshop was held at Central Luzon State University (CLSU), Science City of Munoz, Nueva Ecija from May 12-14, 2014. A total of 30 participants from CLSU, Aurora Science College of Technoly (ASCOT), Bulacan Agricultural State College (BASC), Bataan Peninsula State University (BPSU), Batanes State College (BSC), Cagayan State University (CSU),Isabela State University (ISU), Nueva Viscaya State University (NVSU), Quirino State University (QSU), Ramon Magsaysay Technological University (RMTU) and Tarlac College of Agriculture (TCA) attended the workshop. Similar to the previous workshop for Region XI, the workshop aimed to teach the participants how to extract exposure information from their building survey and how to use said information for conducting earthquake impact assessment for their respective provinces from Region II and III.

Aside from deriving building information from the national statistics data to make it useful for earthquake impact assessment, participants were also taught how to further enhance their results using their own surveyed data. Results are expressed in terms of building physical damage, fatalities and economic loss. They were able to visualize the map in REDAS and in Quantum GIS. Resource speakers and facilitators during the workshop were led by PHIVOLCS Deputy Director Bartolome C. Bautista and supported by Maria Leonila P. Bautista, Janila B. Deocampo, Johnlery P. Deximo, Abigail A. Polintan, Anne Lorraine Delos Santos, Dave Andrei Rivera, and Ruffy Villanueva.
