PHIVOLCS-conducted a six-day training entitled, “Capacity Enhancement of Region I Researchers in Academe and Other Government Agencies on Hazards, Risk Assessment, and Exposure Database Development through the Use of the REDAS Software” last 18 – 23 January 2016. The training was held at Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), Batac City, Ilocos Norte. The aim of the training was to provide and familiarize the participants with the capability of REDAS software, specifically the modules that can be used for risk assessment.  The training was a part of the PCIEERD-funded project entitled “Regional Disaster Science and Management S&T Capacity Development (Phase II)”.

There was a total of 51 participants during the training, 24 of them came from the different State Colleges and Universities (SUCs) in Region 1. The said SUCs are Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMSU), Pangasinan State University (PSU), University of Northern Philippines (UNP), North Luzon Philippines State College (NLPSC), and Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC). There were eight participants from the different local government units in Region 1. There were also 19 guest participants from DILG-I, DOST-1, DPWH-1, NEDA-1, OCD-1, and Isabela State University-Echague (ISU-E). The participants were provided with REDAS version 2.8X. A total of 51 license keys was issued during the said training.

The first day of the training covered the introduction of PHIVOLCS, installation and orientation on the basic features of the REDAS software.  The following days of the training covered hazards lectures, Building Risk Database, Earthquake Risk Assessment, Use of SQLite as Relational and Spatial Database System, and Seismic Hazard Assessment. In addition, installation of the softwares Exposure Database Module (EDM), Sqlite and Quantum GIS, and the EDM and MyTracks in android devices were conducted during the training. They were taught how to use the EDM in Android Devices for building survey. Different Earthquake Risk Assessment Methodologies and computations were also taught in the training as well as identifying building earthquake damage levels for earthquake risk assessment.  The highlight also was the provision of the EDM for Android Version 1.5, which was introduced in a REDAS batch for the first time.

The participants showed enthusiasm and were very thankful because according to them, the tool will be able to help them determine the possible impacts given earthquake scenarios, which will help them prepare and plan accordingly.

Speakers and facilitators during the training were Bartolome C. Bautista, Maria Leonila P. Bautista, Julius Galdiano, Sharon Juliet M. Arruejo, Policarpio L. Mabborang, Jr., Jyrus Jyles D. Cadiente, Elmer Rosete, Dave Andrei V. Rivera, Greggue Ann Lyza T. Castro, Ruffy R. Villanueva, John Ted S. Sison, Frances Marie G. Yanos, and Jayson L. Silang
