KANLAON VOLCANO ADVISORY 09 February 2008 8:00 AM
This is a notice of increased seismic activity at Kanlaon Volcano.
During the past two days Kanlaon Volcano’s (10 0 24.7’N, 123 0 7.9’E) seismic network detected a significant rise in the number of volcanic earthquakes. Nineteen (19) low frequency volcanic earthquakes were recorded during the past 24-hour observation period and prior to that ten (10) volcanic earthquakes were recorded last 07 February. Visual observation of the crater was not possible due to thick clouds covering the summit area.
The above observations indicate that the volcano is at a period of volcanic unrest. Hence, episodes of ash explosion can possibly occur and the public is strongly advised not to enter the four (4) kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) because sudden explosions may occur without warning. Furthermore, residents of areas beyond the PDZ that are downwind of the crater are likely to be affected by ash falls during explosions. PHIVOLCS is continuously monitoring the volcanic activity and shall provide updates with each significant development.
