KANLAON VOLCANO BULLETIN 10 February 2008 8:00 AM
The seismic network at Kanlaon Volcano (10 0 24.7’N, 123 0 7.9’E) recorded a total of twenty-one (21) low frequency volcanic earthquakes (LFVQ) during the past 24 hours. The significant increase in seismicity has been observed for the past three days. However, visual observation of the crater was not possible due to thick clouds covering the summit area.
Due to the increasing number of recorded volcanic earthquakes, PHIVOLCS raises Kanlaon Volcano’s alert status from Alert Level 0 to Alert Level 1 which means that the volcano is at slightly elevated unrest and volcanic activity could lead to steam and ash ejections. The public is strongly advised not to enter the four (4)-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) because sudden explosions may occur without warning. Furthermore, residents of areas beyond the PDZ that are downwind of the crater are likely to be affected by ash falls during explosions. PHIVOLCS is continuously monitoring the volcanic activity and shall provide updates with each significant development.
