Mayon Volcano Bulletin

01 September 2006

8:00 AM

Four explosions occurred  at 10:12 AM, 11:25 AM, 2:35 PM and 5:21 PM yesterday.  These brief outburst were obscured by clouds but distinct rumbling were heard in various places, in particular to the west and north of Mayon;s crater (13.2576oN, 123.6856oE).  Traces of ash fell over Maninila, Guinobatan and over the Mayon Resthouse area in Buang, Tabaco.  There were also 277 tremor episodes caused by chunks of lava detaching from the summit and slowly advancing lava flow deposits in the vicinity of upper Mabinit.  Some 25 volcanic earthquakes signified magma movement.

In summary, a high level of volcanic unrest persists due to sporadic explosions, significant number of volcanic earthquakes and continuing lava extrusion.  In this regard, Alert Level 4 remains in effect, which means that the 8-kilometer radius Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) over the southeast should remain off-limits.  For other areas around the volcano, the presently enforced EDZ is 7 kilometers from the summit.
