Mayon Volcano Bulletin 02 September 2006 8:00 AM
A small explosion occurred at Mayon Volcano (13.2576oN, 123.6856oE) yesterday at 2:01 PM. This explosion was not seen due to thick clouds covering the summit crater. Around 248 tremor episodes and 31 volcanic earthquakes characterized the seismic activity for the past 24 hours. The Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) emission rate was significantly high, amounting to about 6,585 tonnes per day yesterday. The continuous flow of incandescent lava and the detaching fragments from the main lava flow was still observed last night, falling towards the southeast sector of the volcano.
Accordingly, Mayon is still undergoing high level of volcanic unrest due to occurrence of intermittent explosions, significant number of volcanic earthquakes, elevated volcanic gas outputs and continuing lava extrusion. In this regard, Alert Level 4 remains in effect, which means that the 8-kilometer radius EXTENDED Danger Zone (EDZ) over the southeast should remain off-limits. For other areas around the volcano, the presently enforced EDZ is 7 kilometers from the summit.
