Mayon Volcano Bulletin

26 September 2006

8:00 AM

Mayon Volcano’s (13.2576’N, 123.6856’E) seismic network detected Twelve (12) volcanic earthquakes and sixty-five (65) tremor episodes during the past 24-hour observation period. Surface activity was characterized by intermittent rolling of incandescent lava fragments and intense glow from the crater. The Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) emission rate was 1,200 tonnes/day yesterday compared to 1,300 tonnes/day recorded the other day.

Alert Level 3 remains in effect over Mayon Volcano, which means that the volcano is still at a high level of unrest. Ash explosions from the crater and secondary pyroclastic flows arising from the collapse of lava fragments may occur suddenly. PHIVOLCS reminds the public that the following zones should remain off-limits: the Extended Danger Zone (EDZ), which is the area in the southeast sector up to 7 kilometers from the summit crater, and for all the other areas around the volcano, the 6 kilometer-radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ).
