Mayon Volcano Bulletin 10 August 2006 8:00 AM
Mayon Volcano (13.2576°N, 123.6856°E) generated a minor explosion recorded at 2:07 PM yesterday. However, only three (3) volcanic earthquakes occurred in the past 24 hours. The Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) reading yielded 6,573 tonnes per day (t/d) yesterday compared with the previous 7,829 t/d. This apparent lull in the activity along with the slight change in the SO2 emission rate is still significant and reflects the unusual prevailing state of unrest of the volcano.
Visual observation yesterday was impossible due to thick cloud cover over the volcano. However; up until early this morning, instruments detected some 501 episodes of tremor generated by the collapsing fragments of the advancing lava flow.
The public is reminded that Alert Level 4 is still in effect, which means that a high probability of hazardous explosive eruption exists. The eight (8) kilometers EXTENDED DANGER ZONE (EDZ) in the southeast sector of the volcano should be observed at all times. PHIVOLCS reminds everyone that all safety precautions concerning this alert level status should strictly be enforced. At other areas around the volcano, this EDZ is seven (7) kilometers from the summit crater. Areas outside of the EDZ are advised to be on the alert for updates regarding their status for possible evacuation in case volcanic activity intensifies.
