Mayon Volcano Update

10 August 2006

6:00 PM

Two (2) ash explosions occurred at 11:13AM and 3:21PM at Mayon Volcano (13.2576°N, 123.6856°E) since 6:00AM today. Four (4) volcanic earthquakes were also recorded during the observation period from 6AM to 4PM. The Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) emission rate was measured this morning at 7,068 tonnes per day (t/d). This value is still way above the background level for the volcano, which is 500 t/d. The explosions and the relatively high SO2 emission rate reflect the continuing high unrest of the volcano.

Thick clouds covered the volcano the entire period of observation. Seismic instruments detected some 175 tremor episodes generated by the collapsing fragments of the advancing lava flow.

The public is reminded that Alert Level 4 is still in effect, which means that a high probability of hazardous explosive eruption exists. The eight (8) kilometers EXTENDED DANGER ZONE (EDZ) in the southeast sector of the volcano should be observed at all times. PHIVOLCS reminds everyone that all safety precautions concerning this alert level status should strictly be enforced. At other areas around the volcano, this EDZ is seven (7) kilometers from the summit crater. Areas outside of the EDZ are advised to be on the alert for updates regarding their status for possible evacuation in case volcanic activity intensifies
