Mayon Volcano Bulletin 11 August 2006 6:00 PM
Five (5) mild explosions were recorded at Mayon Volcano (13.2576oN 123.6856oE) since 6 AM until 4 PM today The explosions occurred at 5:14 AM, 5:18 AM, 12:11 PM, 2:25 PM and 3:50 PM. Some grayish ash clouds were seen quickly dissipating after the 3:50 PM explosion, which is one of the biggest to date, based on instrumental records. Other explosions were not directly observed due to thick cloud cover.
Six (6) volcanic earthquakes, which is associated with magma ascent inside the volcano and 213 tremors generated by collapsing lava blocks and continued flow of lava were likewise recorded during the observation period. The Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) emission rate was still high, measured at 6,876 tonnes per day (t/d). The explosions and high SO2 measurement reflect the continuing high unrest of Mayon Volcano.
The public is reminded that Alert Level 4 is still in effect, which means that a high probability of hazardous explosive eruption exists. The eight (8) kilometers EXTENDED DANGER ZONE (EDZ) in the southeast sector of the volcano should be observed at all times. In this connection, PHIVOLCS reminds everyone to observe safety precautions relevant with this alert level. At other areas around the volcano, this EDZ is seven (7) kilometers from the summit crater. Areas outside of the EDZ are advised to be on the alert for updates regarding their status for possible evacuation in case volcanic activity intensifies.
