Project Title: Tsunami Hazard Mapping in the Philippines

Project Background:

Historically, the Philippines has experienced large tsunami events in the past. The 17 August 1976 Ms 8.1 Moro Gulf Earthquake generated a tsunami that resulted in the death of more than 4, 790 lives in the municipalities of Region 9 and 12. The 15 November 1994 Ms7.1 Mindoro earthquake generated a tsunami that resulted in 98 fatalities.

Due to this threat of tsunami, PHIVOLCS has been generating 1: 50,000 scale Tsunami HazardMaps, under the DOST-GIA & READY Projects, for the entire Philippines since 2007. However, one problem that arises from utilizing 1: 50,000 scale topographic maps as base maps for tsunami hazard was the difficulty in identifying contour intervals for tsunami inundation due to its low resolutions. Hence, this project aims to improve the results of tsunami hazard mapping from the previous years, using the digital elevation model derived from Interferometric SAR (IfSAR) images, with a 5m x 5m resolution. Moreover, this project utilizes present satellite imagery to delineate and update the shorelines of different provinces.

To expedite the GIS-based work needed, additional personnel regardless of age, sexual orientation, gender preference, physical disability, education, religion, political affiliation, economic and social status, race and ethnicity is needed to process & digitized tsunami hazard information provided that the technical requirements needed for generating the project outputs are met. The application is open to all individuals who are interested in tsunami research.
