DOST-PHIVOLCS conducted the Seminar on Tsunami Hazards, Community Preparedness, and Early Warning System on October 28, 2022 in Bulungan Seafood Market, Paranaque City. During the opening program, Mayor Eric Olivarez, through the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Officer, Dr. Teodoro Gonzales, Jr., thanked the Institute for choosing the City as its host for the observance of the World Tsunami Awareness Day (WTAD) 2022.

Ms. Charmaine Villamil, Senior Science Research Specialist, provided an overview of the WTAD, including its history and the activities conducted by DOST-PHIVOLCS to commemorate it. She highlighted the aim of this year’s activity to the Sendai Framework Global Targets specifically Target G, which is “to substantially increase the availability and access to early warning systems and DRR information”.

Science Research Specialist Mr. Bhenz Rodriguez talked about “Baybayin sa Pinas, sa Tsunami ‘di Ligtas!”: Tsunami Hazards and Risks in the Philippines, while Supervising Science Research Specialist Ms. Joan Salcedo discussed “Tsunami-Ready Ka Na Ba?”: Developing Tsunami-Ready Community and Early Warning System.

Niño, Tambo, Don Galo, Baclaran, and San Dionisio, City-accredited community disaster volunteers, Philippine National Police-Maritime Group, fisherfolks, and San Dionisio Credit Cooperative during the observance of the World Tsunami Awareness Day (WTAD) 2022 in Parañaque City

 

There were 114 participants (46 female, 68 male) from the Office of Civil Defense-National Capital Region (OCD-NCR), DOST-NCR, Barangays Sto. Niño, Tambo, Don Galo, Baclaran, and San Dionisio, City-accredited community disaster volunteers, Philippine National Police-Maritime Group, fisherfolks, and San Dionisio Credit Cooperative.

Dr. Ma. Mylene Villegas, Chief Science Research Specialist, closed the program by recognizing the support of the City Government.
