Training 3DP 2

A two-day training workshop on the 3D Philippines Information System and its Applications on 3D Visualization and Processing was organized by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) and the De La Salle University (DLSU), in collaboration with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), last November 16-17, 2022 at the DOST-PHIVOLCS Auditorium in Quezon City.

A total of 164 participants from various national government agencies (NGAs), such as the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), National Housing Authority (NHA), National Irrigation Administration (NIA), National Water Resources Board (NWRB) and Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA),  local government units (Municipality of Pateros, Mandaluyong, and Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (QCDRRMO)), private organization (Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines (ASEP)), and the academe (De La Salle University (DLSU)), attended the training workshop designed to introduce the 3D Philippines Information System and for the participants to learn how to navigate and input borehole information and use these data for 3D visualization and GIS software applications.

The first session commenced with lectures on borehole reviews and its data fields, data processing & GIS applications, and the use of the 3D Philippines Information System. These included demonstrations and hands-on exercises on navigating the 3D Philippines Information System which involved creating, viewing, editing, and managing borehole data and analysis using the 3D visualization map. The following day, the training course continued with orientations on utilizing the features and functionalities of geographic information systems (GIS) such as QGIS, ArcGIS, and GeoVisionary which were followed by hands-on activities using 3D and GIS Software for visualization of different applications of borehole information. This training program enhances the process of data filtering from borehole logs and expands the water management and geotectonic-related research needed to build safer structures across the country.

Ms. Lyn L. Datul, Mr. Raymund Torres, Ms. Roxanne C. Capua, Ms. Maria Erlinda P. Pajarito, and Mr. Federico B. Dela Peña, representatives of MMDA, NHA, NWRB, DPWH, and LGU, jointly expressed their sincere appreciation for the valuable information gained from the workshop. Additionally, the speakers commended 3D Philippines for being innovative and opening doors for collaboration with different institutions. To support this initiative, they also proposed ways to improve the 3DPH InfoSys to assist in the development of more stakeholder-sensitive products and services in the years to come.

The training concluded successfully with closing remarks from the project proponents and partners. Mr. Bonn Allen M. Perias highlighted the utilization of the 3D Philippines Information System in government agencies and local government units, to achieve sustainability of the central repository of borehole data. Following his speech, Dr. Erica Elice S. Uy encouraged everyone to keep an open mind and explore new possibilities, particularly, when it comes to research. According to Dr. Uy, research is important because of its great contribution to efficient nation-building and disaster risk reduction and management. Finally, Ms. Mabelline T. Cahulogan called for action in populating the 3DPH InfoSys. She emphasized the implications of extracting value from the borehole-data input using the system, such as a detailed study of surface and subsurface processes, groundwater mapping for water exploration, suitability model development, advanced suitability site identification for housing projects, and 3D earthquake plot visualization where theories and hypotheses can be formulated and tested. Together, all the agencies involved in this project, hope for more collaborators that will help the Philippine Construction Industry build safer structures through well-established research and verified information that can be accessed through the 3D Philippines Information System.
