The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) will host a 2-cluster seminar-workshop entitled “PHIVOLCS InfoPress: Understanding and Communicating Geologic Hazards in Region 1” on 18-19 September 2024 in San Fernando City, La Union, and Batac City, Ilocos Norte.

DOST-PHIVOLCS, in collaboration with the Regional Offices of DOST, the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), and the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), is continuously working to address the gap in science communication between the public and science communities. The Institute aims to empower the private and government media, public information officers, and frontliners from OCD and PIA with the necessary tools and information to ensure the accuracy and consistency of information disseminated to the public for preparedness and during emergencies.

A pool of experts from the DOST-PHIVOLCS will provide insightful discussions explaining commonly used terms in reporting geologic hazards and their impacts; earthquake and tsunami scenarios in the Region; and how to prepare and properly respond to geological hazards such as earthquakes. In the workshop, the participants will demonstrate the knowledge they have acquired from the discussion.

On July 27, 2022, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the provinces in northwestern Luzon, including La Union and Ilocos Norte, with an observed intensity of PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale VI (very strong). The Ilocos Region is seismically active because of the presence of active faults- northern segments of the Philippine Fault, Abra River Fault, West Ilocos Fault System, Naglibacan Fault; and the Manila Trench.

The DOST-PHIVOLCS invites the media practitioners and information officers to join the activity as our partner with a crucial role in building well-informed, better-prepared, and more resilient communities in the Philippines through accurate and timely communication of volcano, earthquake, and tsunami information.
