The DANAS Project, which focuses on integrating local stories with scientific information, is set to launch the DANAS Bicolano Sourcebooks on February 12, 2025, at 9:00 AM at Friendship Hall, Hotel Lucca, Legazpi City, Albay. The Sourcebooks are designed to enhance community preparedness for volcanic hazards, particularly those related to eruptions from Mayon and Bulusan.

Sourcebooks Launching for Bicolano (Albay and Sorsogon) Language

The DANAS Project brings together scientific research and real-life stories from people who have experienced volcanic eruptions. The goal is to make volcanic hazards easier to understand and more relevant to the local community.

“We want to ensure people understand volcanic risks in a way that feels personal and relatable,” said Dr. Ma. Mylene Villegas, PHIVOLCS Deputy Director and DANAS Project Leader. “These Sourcebooks empower Bicolano communities by providing them knowledge and tools they need to protect themselves and their families.”

The Sourcebooks will be available in print and digital formats and include video packages. They will be distributed to educators, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) officers, and media outlets across the region.

The Earthquake, Tsunami and Volcano Disaster Narratives for Experiential Knowledge-based Science Communication - DANAS Project, launched in March 2023, is a collaboration between the DOST-PHIVOLCS, Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU)-La Union, and the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV). It is funded by the DOST Grants-In-Aid and monitored by the DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD).
