The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) aims to train teachers on basic information about the science of earthquake and tsunami and its hazards, preparedness, and how to communicate this information to their students through a one-day “Teachers’ Training on Communicating Earthquake and Tsunami Hazards” for elementary school teachers of Ormoc City.

In coordination with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the local government of Ormoc City, two batches from the public and private elementary teachers from 95 schools and staff from Ormoc City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office will attend the training on July 4 & 5, 2018 at Pongos Hotel, Ormoc City, Leyte.

The training intends to capacitate teachers to provide school children with the right information to prepare, respond and protect oneself in the event of an earthquake or tsunami. The program highlights the use of DOST-PHIVOLCS teaching aids, “Ahh..Ngayon Alam Ko Na” and “11 Mga Dapat Gawin Kapag May Lindol”. The flashcard “11 Mga Dapat Gawin Kapag May Lindol” features a sign language guide for the hearing impaired. These flashcards are adapted from materials developed by Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund Deutschalnd (ASB).

Earlier this year, DOST-PHIVOLCS conducted three-day training on Communicating Volcano, Earthquake, and Tsunami Hazards for 28 high school teachers and school disaster risk reduction focal person/coordinator last April 24-26, 2018 at Pongos Hotel, Ormoc City, Leyte.
