PHIVOLCS conducted a six-day training entitled "Mainstreaming of Disaster Risk Reduction into the Local Development Planning Process, Contingency Planning,  and Emergency Preparedness through the Provision and Use of the REDAS Software" for the province of Ilocos Norte last October 24 - 29, 2016. The training was held at Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) Hostel, City of Batac, Ilocos Norte. The goal of the training was to provide and familiarize the participants with the capabilities of the REDAS Software, especially the modules which are designed to be used for gathering exposure data and conducting impact assessment.   The training is part of the PCIEERD-funded project on “Regional Disaster Science and Management S&T Capacity Development”, a collaborative project between PHIVOLCS, Isabela State Universityand MMSU.

There was a total of 45 participants during the training.  Twenty-nine of them came from the local government units (LGUs) of Ilocos Norte namely: City of Batac (3), Dingras (2), Laoag City (2), San Nicolas (2), Bacarra (2),  Badoc (2), Carasi (2), Dumalneg (2), Marcos (2), Paoay (2) and Vintar (4).  There were also participants from MMSU (10), Mapua Institute of Technology (4) and Laoac, Pangasinan (1). The participants were provided with REDAS version 2.9a.  A total of 42 REDAS software license keys was issued during the said event.

Main topics included installation and orientation on the basic features of REDAS Software, Building Risk Database, Earthquake Risk Assessment, the use of SQLite as a Relational and Spatial Database System, and Seismic Hazard Assessment. In addition, software such as Exposure Database Module (EDM), SQLite and Quantum GIS, and the EDM and MyTracks in Android devices were also installed during the training. The participants were taught how to use the EDM in Android Devices for conducting building survey. Different earthquake risk assessment methodologies and computations were also taught in the training, as well as identifying building earthquake damage levels for conducting earthquake risk assessment.  The two REDAS modules namely Severe Wind Impact Forecasting Tool (SWIFT) and the Flood Loss Assessment Tool (FLOAT) were also taught in a REDAS Training for LGUs for the first time.

Two guest speakers, Francisca J. Francisco and Cynthia O. Iglesia (PAGASA), both from PAGASA-Laoag Station gave the talk on hydrometeorological hazards.
