PHIVOLCS conducted a five-day training entitled "Development of Community-Based Early Warning System for Tsunami Prone Areas of the Philippines". The said training was conducted by PHIVOLCS for the local government units facing the northern part of the Philippine Trench.  The training was held from November 18-22, 2019 at Microtel Technohub, Quezon City. The goal of the training was to capacitate the participating LGUs on understanding tsunami and its hazard, tsunami simulation and animation and development of community-based early warning system (CBEWS).  The participants are expected to lead in developing tsunami CBEWS upon their return to their community.  To do this, two specific REDAS modules were extensively taught: the Tsunami Simulation and Impact Module (TsuSIM) and latest Earthquake and Tsunami Alerting Model (ETAM).  REDAS Tsusim is a module that can perform tsunami simulation and calculate impacts.  The REDAS ETAM, first to be introduced during the training, is capable of near realtime seismic monitoring of earthquakes using the Philippine network, USGS NEIC and RIMES.  The user can also use it develop evacuation plans, locate signage and directional signs.

There was a total of 55 participants during the training: 47 from the LGUs of the participating provinces - Aurora (2), Quezon (6), Albay (2), Camarines Norte (2), Camarines Sur (2), Catanduanes (8), Sorsogon (7), Northern Samar (2), Eastern Samar (2); 7 from the  Office of Civil Defense - Central Office (3), Region III (1), Region IV-A (1), Region V (1), Region VIII (1); and 1 from Bulacan State University. A total of 53 License Keys were issued for REDAS/ETAM during the training.

Dr. Maria Leonila P. Bautista, REDAS Programme Coordinator and Ms Ynna Patricia Aquino of the GeoriskPH Project facilitates during the REDAS training.

The training stated above covered the following: Lectures on Tsunami Hazard Mapping, Use of REDAS - Tsunami Simulation Module (TsuSim) for Tsunami Propagation Modelling, Inundation Mapping and Impact Estimation, Use of REDAS - Earthquake and Tsunami Alerting Module for Monitoring, Intensity Reporting and Evacuation Planning, GeoMapper Exposure Database Module Survey using StreetView, National Tsunami Risk Mitigation Program, Tsunami Monitoring in the Philippines, Tsunami Early Warning System (TeWS), and Community-Based Early Warning System among others. The participants were also tasked to create a Tsunami Evacuation Plan per province using the outputs from the modules introduced.
