PHIVOLCS conducted training on the use of the REDAS software for Eastern Samar last November 18-23, 2012. It was held at Tacloban City. There were 55 participants from 18 local government units from Eastern Samar including the provincial agencies/offices like DENR, PLGU, PPDO, AFP, PNP.  The East Samar State University (ESSU) also participated. There were also participants from OCD Region 8, Plan Philippines, and DILG as well as from the provincial government of Northern Samar and Leyte. PHIVOLCS Director Renato U. Solidum, Engr. Edgardo M. Esperancilla DOST Regional Director and Mr. Peregerio R. Balase, PDRRMO Designate graced the Opening Ceremony on November 19, 2012 while PHIVOLCS Deputy Director Bartolome C. Bautista, Cherelyn V. Lubang of OCD Region 8,  Arnaldo T. Amosco, Provincial Director of Science and Technology, and Mr. Peregerio R. Balase graced the Closing ceremony on November 23, 2012.

REDAS was developed by PHIVOLCS and is now being shared, at no cost to local government units as a tool for emergency preparedness and more importantly for mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into the local development planning. The training also taught them how to use Exposure Database Module (EDM), SQLite and Spatialite in building risk databases; and the capability to visualize the results of REDAS’ Seismic Hazard Assessment (SHA) into QGIS (Quantum GIS) and back to the REDAS platform. The activity was funded by the Eastern Samar LGUs, OCD, Plan Philippines, READY Project and PHIVOLCS-DOST.
