1. The Project

The PHIVOLCS-funded project Development of Early Warning Systems for Landslides, also known as the DYNASLOPE Project, is a multidisciplinary endeavor addressing the problem of landslide risk. The project is composed of instrumentation engineers, software engineers, civil engineers, geologists, social scientists, and community developers working together towards a unified goal.

 

2. The Vacancy

The project are in need of (2) SRS II; (3) Senior SRS and (1) Supervising SRS that will significantly contribute to the project’s research and capacity building efforts. Project contract is 6 months (July – December 2018).

 

3. Job Description

(1) Senior Science Research Specialist

1)Supervise day-to-day operations of the monitoring team

2)Facilitate planning and assessment of the monitoring team

3)Regularly report work progress and concerns to the Supervising SRS

4)Conduct research related to sensor data monitoring and analysis

5)Develop methods and tools for sensor data monitoring and analysis

6)Conduct monitoring fieldwork in project sites

7)Assist in the conduct of seminars and consultations

8)Conduct pre and post fieldwork administrative tasks

9)Conduct work related to implementation of early warning system protocol

 

Educational background

1)BS Geology, Civil Engineering, Physics, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Math, or related field

 

Experience/Training/Compentency:

1)Preferably, licensed professional, if applicable to the profession

2)Preferably with at least one (1) year of programming related work

3)Knowledgeable and skilled in, or at least can easily adapt to, Python based computer programming

4)Demonstrate good math¬based problem¬solving and analytical skills

1)Heads in local and web server database management

2)Heads in the management and development of client and experts web presentation interface

3)Conduct work related to implementation of early warning system protocol

4)Manage streamlining of early warning system operations

(1) Supervising Science Research Specialist

1)Conduct work related to the implementation of early warning system protocol

2)Conduct research pertaining to one of the major output of the project (Risk assessment methods, early warning system information system and organizational frameworks, project strategic communications, project monitoring and evaluation)

3)Manage and lead (both process and output development) a research group, ensuring research and intervention outputs are delivered satisfactorily and on time

4)Coordinate activities and outputs with the project’s overall management team

5)Assist research efforts related to disaster risk reduction and management initiatives for communities at risk of landslides

6)Conduct capacity building activities (trainings, seminars, workshops) with the community and other relevant stakeholders

7)Conduct work related to the implementation of the landslide early warning system

8)Coordinate project concerns and logistics with the community and other relevant stakeholders

9)Accomplish administrative documents related to the project

10)Participate in meetings and workshops facilitated for the whole project

 

Educational background

1)At least Bachelor’s degree in education, social sciences, community development, communications, or related field

 

Experience/Training/Compentency:

1)At least 2 years experience in project and research management

2)At least 2 years experience in social science research

3)Preferably, with at least one (1) year experience in conducting seminars for grassroots communities on topics related to landslides or DRRM work

4)Demonstrate good seminar ¬facilitation skills

5)Demonstrate good communication skills, both in English and Filipino

6)Additional local language/s is/are preferred

 

(1) Science Research Specialist  II

1)Conduct quarterly and quick-response surveys

2)Write reports, documentation, technical papers related to team output

3)Conduct research related to landslide scenario

4)Assist in geotechnical analysis of project sites

5)Conduct work related to the implementation of early warning system protocol

6)Assist in the conduct of seminars and consultations

7)Conduct pre and post fieldwork administrative tasks

 

Educational background

1)BS Geology

 

Experience/Training/Compentency:

1)Preferably, licensed professional

2)Preferably, with at least one (1) year experience in relevant field, preferably in engineering geology or geotechnical engineering

3)Preferably, with at least six (6) months experience in landslide mapping, monitoring and early warning

4)Knowledgeable and skilled in GIS applications

5)Knowledgeable and skilled in geologic mapping

6)Preferably, with background in landslide investigations

7)Demonstrate good report writing skill

8)Physically fit to conduct field works in difficult terrain

9)Can and willing to go on long fieldworks and frequent fieldworks

10)Can and willing to render monitoring work even at nights, weekends, or holidays

11)Can work well with the team
