Amid the ongoing unrest of Mayon Volcano and the continued threat to surrounding communities, the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), in partnership with the Provincial Government of Albay, DOST V, Philippine Information Agency (PIA) V, and Office of Civil Defense (OCD) V, will conduct “PHIVOLCS InfoPress: Understanding and Communicating Mayon Volcano Hazards and DOST-PHIVOLCS Information Products” on 11 February 2026, 8:30 AM, at the Farmer’s Auditorium, AFB Ville, Cabangan, Camalig, Albay.
The seminar is intended for Albay-based media practitioners and public information officers, as the institute highlights the vital role of the media in ensuring the dissemination of reliable information during periods of heightened volcanic unrest. Through the PHIVOLCS InfoPress, DOST-PHIVOLCS aims to strengthen participants’ capacity to communicate clear, timely, and science-based information on Mayon Volcano hazards.
Mayon Volcano remains under Alert Level 3, indicating an increased tendency toward a hazardous eruption characterized by lava dome effusion, rockfalls, pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), and increased volcanic gas emissions. Updates on the current volcanic activities and possible eruption scenarios will be discussed during the seminar, along with clarification of commonly used volcano-related terms and guidance on appropriate preparedness and response actions based on official DOST-PHIVOLCS advisories. Together with its partner agencies, DOST-PHIVOLCS seeks to promote consistency and accuracy in public messaging and support informed decision-making to help safeguard communities at risk.
