In observance of the UN-declared World Tsunami Awareness Day, the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), together with ARISE Philippines, the Pasay City Government, and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), will team up to strengthen tsunami awareness and preparedness in Metro Manila through the advocacy campaign, Tsunami! Run for Safety. The event will be held on October 24, 2026, at SM MOA, Pasay City.
“Tsunami preparedness is a shared responsibility. It requires the cooperation of government agencies, local governments, the private sector, and communities to ensure that people have the information they need to recognize the hazard and take immediate action when necessary,” said DOST-PHIVOLCS Director Dr. Teresito C. Bacolcol.
The initiative highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in bringing tsunami safety and risk-informed preparedness actions closer to communities, particularly those in the coastal areas of Metro Manila and adjacent provinces threatened by the movement of the Manila Trench. It also reaffirms the Philippines’ commitment to advocating for global tsunami readiness.
To officially kick off, DOST-PHIVOLCS will hold a press conference on October 13, 2026, 10:00 AM, at the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Auditorium, Visayas Avenue, Quezon City. The media event, which coincides with the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR), will provide an opportunity to discuss the partners’ tsunami disaster risk reduction initiatives and the value of having the right information for one’s safety.
