The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), in partnership with the Geological Society of the Philippines (GSP), the Municipality of Capas, Tarlac, and the City of San Pablo, Laguna will host the 12th International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) Commission on Volcanic Lakes (CVL) Workshop (CVL12) in the Philippines from March 9–18, 2026 in Clark, Pampanga, Capas, Tarlac, and San Pablo City, Laguna. The 10-day workshop will bring together international geoscientists, researchers, and local experts to discuss the latest advances in volcanic lake research, hazard assessment, and monitoring techniques.

“Hosting CVL12 highlights the Philippines’ commitment to science-based disaster preparedness,” said Dr. Teresito C. Bacolcol, DOST-PHIVOLCS Director. “By connecting local and international experts, we can strengthen monitoring, improve communication, and enhance community readiness for volcanic hazards, ultimately helping to protect lives and livelihoods.”

Participants will take part in scientific sessions in Clark, Pampanga, and workshops to Pinatubo Volcano Crater Lake via Capas in Tarlac, and the San Pablo Maars, a series of ancient volcanic lakes in Laguna. Hands-on activities will include water sampling and gas emission measurements to gain practical insights into volcanic lake dynamics and the hazards they may pose to surrounding communities. The workshop aims to foster stronger international collaboration and scientific partnerships to understand better and monitor volcanic hazards and build safer, more resilient communities worldwide.
