Science Speaks, Everyone Listens: DOST-PHIVOLCS Steps Up Its Science Communication

To strengthen its capacity in delivering timely, science-based, and inclusive hazards information, the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) conducted a two-day seminar-workshop titled “PHIVOLCS ScienceSpeaks: Effective Science Communication through Gender-Inclusive Media & Public Engagement” on September 22–23, 2025, at Ardenhills Suites, Quezon City.

The event brought together selected PHIVOLCS personnel for hands-on discussions and demonstrations aimed at enhancing their skills in communicating technical information related to volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis. Resource speakers from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), DOST – Science and Technology Information Institute (STII), and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) guided participants on how to craft and deliver understandable and impactful content to non-expert audiences, while also helping them build confidence in addressing information demands, especially during high-pressure or emergencies.

Participants practice mock interviews during the PHIVOLCS ScienceSpeaks workshop.

The seminar-workshop highlights gender-inclusive communication to promote the creation of messages that are respectful, accessible, and responsive to the needs of diverse communities. By adopting gender-sensitive science-based communication, DOST-PHIVOLCS reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind in its public service and disaster risk communication efforts.

Participants included staff from DOST-PHIVOLCS’ technical divisions, Geology and Geophysics Research and Development Division (GGRDD), Geologic Disaster Awareness and Preparedness Division (GDAPD), Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division (VMEPD), and Seismological Observation and Earthquake Prediction Division (SOEPD), with personnel from the Volcano Observatories and the Staff-controlled Seismic Stations.
